Today (or tonight wherever you happen to be), let's talk about the cold, because it's the winter solstice where I am. Darkest day of the year, unless there's an eclipse or something.
Also I have other blog posts in my drafts, but I can't seem to finish them and they're a bit more technical, screw them! Anyway, the cold, right.
I won't talk about having a cold (this sucks), but being cold (this sucks but not on all fronts, see title).
So, why is the cold a good thing? Electricity-saving advantages? Contrast-induced home coziness? Well apparently, being cold is a natural antidepressant, it might keep you focused, and having too hot a shower is bad for your sleep (though cold feet are also bad for your sleep, so it's more about balance). So it may look like getting cold is bad, but actually not! Nope, I am definitely not qualified to give medical advice.
And what about the coldest season, winter? It's an underrated season, especially when it doesn't snow.
Is winter without snow boring as fuck?
Snow is very pretty, although where I live we have it only once every 3-5 years on average. I think it was around 1-2 weeks a year before I was born? Maybe climate change will bring more extreme episodes and between two massive heatwaves once known as summer, we'll be buried in snow in no time. You wish.
Winter without snow is still fun. You have frost, which is still white and pretty, but not nearly as playful. Iced bodies of water are more playful, you can throw rocks and shatter bits. DON'T walk on ice though, unless you know what you're doing! One time I rode a bicycle on ice and thankfully it wasn't a very large patch of ice, so I lost control without falling (the funniest kind of loss of control, by virtue of being the least harmful).
Also you can see further away, because of the atmosphere is clearer and trees don't have leaves. It's great for astronomy, if you can stay outside in that temperature.
All in all, winter still isn't my favorite season of the year. It's fucking cold! Also autumn is very pretty, hard to beat. Cycling in winter is uncomfortable, not because of the cold, but because it's dark very early in the evening at commuting hours.
Stop rambling and turn on the heat, I'm freezing!
I'm fairly cold-tolerant, the one who goes barefoot at home until Halloween. So when I share a room with others, it's often they who keep the radiator running.
It's a bit like eating, eating enough but not too much and being full. The range of satiation & temperature, some people need it to be precise, others are more robust. This is no excuse to brag about it though. Robustness, like the Netiquette says, is to be liberal in what you accept and be conservative in what you say. Okay maybe not the best comparison.
Conclusion
(com…bustion? Chimneys! They're cozy too)
Happy holidays, and happy new year in advance! I don't really have anything else to say.
By the way, I'm reorganizing this blog's posts into folders by year. I added redirection pages, but in a few months, I'll remove them to tidy up a bit. I added a notice on the articles list.
