Disclaimer: this is one of those posts made in half an hour. I am literally cooking curry rice during its writing. Expect typos or funky phrasing.
Robin Rendle's latest article is about work, and I'm inspired enough to share my thoughts on the matter. So here I'll discuss my relationship to work, play, and hobbies.
- The article in question ("Work is just work")
- Speaking of, I found a cool job platform for the EU's game industry if that can help someone
- It is said that you should take a gap year every 7 years during your active life.
I can't find a link for the last statement, even though I put it in the link list. Oh well, maybe later.
Work
I'm very similar to the guy Robin talks about when it comes to my day job: never clock in too early, never clock out too late, rest as much as possible during lunch break (or not: see Hobbies further down). Well, I don't know if I am "a whirlwind" once at work, but nobody complains so it must be fine.
Gosh that would make a terrible CV. Remember David Goodenough, the developer that works half decently? That's kinda me!
It helps a lot that I live close enough to have lunch at home, and that I'm rarely under too much pressure.
Hobbies
Aka: MAKING GAMES!!!
Sometimes, I daydream enough about what game to do next that it slows down my day job a little. If YOU aren't doing that once in a while, then throw me the first stone. You can find my email / social media on the about page to send me that stone.
Granted, I'm not even close to the point of blanking out or making games on my work's PC. Some game makers have succeeded at that, but it's kinda risky, like a whistleblower but for fun instead of alerting the world. Maybe games are about alerting that the world isn't fun enough, though.
Also, since I started moving to a place without my PC on every weekend, my game development has slowed down a lot. Not very motivating, but I started doing more paper game prototypes, brainstorming, and stories as a result. And my sleep and my eyes thank me.
Play
Curiously, I don't play many games. In a year, and excluding rating periods for game jams, I can count the games I played on one hand and a half. Not sure how that counting works.
I mostly play indie games that can run on my computer that is getting older and older. Haven't even made a wish list of games to play when I get a new laptop. Maybe I'll just… play the same games at better quality?
Now, my rice is almost ready, so it's time for the…
Conclusion
Uhh, work-play balance is important, and hobbies shouldn't spread too much on both sides.
That's it, internauts! I hope you have a good day, evening, or whatever whenever. See ya in the next one!
